Chapter History

The Metropolitan New York Chapter was organized March 5, 1990, chartered February 13, 1991, and covers the state regions of Southeastern New York and Western Connecticut. The Metropolitan New York Chapter was organized March 5, 1990, chartered February 13, 1991 and covers the state regions of Southeastern New York and Western Connecticut. As of March, 2006, Northern NJ has joined with the New Jersey Chapter, whose headquarters is in Jersey City.

Filipinos have been present in the Metropolitan New York area for as long as many other immigrant groups have. After the Spanish American War in 1898, many students (mostly male) enrolled at local institutions like Columbia University, New York University, and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Filipino military service men and merchant seaman immigrated to New York after World Wars I and II. Filipinos formed settlements in various ethnic enclaves in New York and New Jersey, in neighborhoods of Woodside, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, and Jersey City.

Filipinos have contributed significantly to New York arts and culture, through Broadway, fashion, music, film, comedy, hip-hop, poetry, and dance. And Filipino Americans have been involved in NYC history, including the Civil Rights Movement, the rise and fall of Wall Street, and sadly were even victims of 9/11. Since 1946, many Filipino families who came to work for the United Nations, the Philippine Mission to the UN and the Philippine Consulate have settled in the metro NYC area.
